A fine and well-maintained example of a time-tested mid century modern design classic, the Brazilian rosewood and black leather 670/671 model lounge chair with ottoman was designed by Charles & Ray Eames and made by Herman Miller. The production numbers on the inside of the plywood shells all match(indicating the pieces are original to the chair) both chair and ottoman retain original fabric and paper labels underneath, the brass bushing on the chair’s swivel base indicates earlier production as do the earlier version aluminum cushion clips. This chair also has three screws under the armrests which is another indication of its age. Assuredly, we can say that this example was produced no later than 1971. But, given all of the above- it is most likely that it was originally ordered in the early to mid 1960s. As each of these were made to order, the only real way to determine exact age is to have the original purchase paperwork.
The seat and the ottoman cushions were reupholstered within the last 25 years and are done in a high quality full grain black leather in keeping with the original. The two upper backrest cushions are down filled and original. The armrests are original and show age appropriate patina with nice wear to the leather.
The rosewood is in fabulous condition and shows light abrasions throughout which are also age-appropriate. No breakage or repairs have been undergone with this chair. This lounge has been very minimally used since the last owner purchased it about 20 years ago.
A truly iconic design.
